Global Diagnostics Ireland and the HSE - Finalist at the Aramark Health Care Innovation Awards 2009

The annual Aramark Health Care Awards took place this year on Wednesday 29th April 2009 at the Guinness Store House in Dublin. These prestigious awards have been designed to recognise and celebrate the commitment of Irish Healthcare stakeholders to improving the standards of patient safety and patient care and to recognise those healthcare partners whose innovative projects most positively impacts on delivering patient care.

With three times the number of nominees this year, the HSE and Global Diagnostics Ireland were finalists in the “Public-Private Healthcare Collaboration” section for the provision of radiology service in the Arklow Primary Care Centre.

The collaborative project between the HSE and launch of the service in the Arklow Primary Care Centre has marked an innovative departure in primary care service delivery in Ireland with patients and their GPs having access to x-ray and ultrasound services in the community for the first time. Since the launch of the service in February 2008, over 9500 scans have been completed on patients who would previously have had to travel up to 40 miles to access this very valuable diagnostic service. GPs receive diagnostic reports via a secure based connection in turnaround times as short as 22 minutes for x-rays and 33 minutes for ultrasound scans allowing for more efficient and appropriate patient care, better use of hospital resources and minimising A&E attendance.

Speaking on the importance of the awards and the continuous strive towards excellence in the Irish healthcare profession, Minister of State Áine Brady said: ' The issue of safety and quality in the delivery of health services lies at the heart of any care system which has the confidence of the people using those services. The winners and finalists here tonight demonstrate the scope of our healthcare professionals and the breadth of the practical application of their knowledge and care.'

Following the awards, Dr Johnny Walker from Global Diagnostics said “the Public-Private collaboration which is the Arklow Radiology service is a perfect encapsulation of quality care, vision and innovation. It demonstrates the efficiencies and effectiveness of a patient centered, first class continuum of quality care delivered close to the patient and available at convenient times”. Even though Global Diagnostics were not outright winners, we are very proud to have been short listed with all the other prestigious nominees.
